Wyatt’s first canyon – Hieroglyphic Canyon

Heiroglyphic Canyon
3.5 miles
Tonto National Forest – Superstition Wilderness

Wyatt’s first canyon was a hike up Hieroglyphic Canyon east of Apache Junction in the Superstition Wilderness Area on a crisp, winter Sonoran Desert day. It was my first canyon hike as well since Wyatt’s birth in November. Mike, Eric and Kyle joined David, Briscoe and me on a relaxing Sunday hike. Wyatt could not have been happier snug in the Bjorn on David’s chest as David and Kyle did imitations of Jon Gruden and Ron Jaworski from Monday Night Football. Despite David’s annoying schtick, with a full belly and a clean diaper Wyatt was asleep in no time as we made our way up the canyon. A slow and steady climb brought us to some outstanding petroglyphs and slick rock pools. Wyatt snoozed as we ate lunch and checked out the panels of primitive drawings. It was pretty cool to get back out into the desert with our new son, good friends and beautiful scenery.
